[Overview]

A fairy tale love-story about a pre-med student who falls in love with a Danish Prince who refused to follow the traditions of his parents and has come to the US to quench his thirst for rebellion. Paige (Julia Stiles) and Chris (Luke Mably) come from two different worlds, but there’s and undeniable attraction between them.

[Synopsis]

For the second time in her career, Julia Stiles plays a character romancing the Crown Prince of Denmark in The Prince & Me, a romantic wish-fulfillment fantasy from director Martha Coolidge. Far from her role as Ophelia in 2000’s Hamlet, however, Stiles plays Paige, a plucky, determined college student from the Midwest who’s buried in her last few semesters of pre-med studies when she meets Eddie, a brash, impudent Danish foreign-exchange student who just happens to have a mysterious partner (Ben Miller) shadowing him in everything he does. What Paige doesn’t know is that Eddie is in fact the spoiled son of the King (James Fox) and Queen (Miranda Richardson) of Denmark, on holiday in America hoping to find a nonstop keg party complete with buxom American babes. What he and his butler don’t count on is squalid dorm life, final exams, and the possibility that Eddie might actually find his true soul mate in the sensible Paige. But when Eddie finally reveals his secret, will Paige want to give up her dreams of becoming a doctor for a playboy prince?

» PAIGE

Paige Morgan (Stiles) is a talented pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin. She drives a pickup truck and grew up on her family’s dairy farm. On the other hand, Edvard Valdemar (Mably) is the crown prince of Denmark, who races his Lamborghini for kicks. The prince and the American girl cross paths on campus after Edvard decides to travel to the heartland of America to attain both an education and a girl gone wild from Wisconsin, like the infomercial displayed on his Denmark cable. (Although in this day and age, it would be more believable if they met on a reality show.) Eddie, or the prince formerly known as Edvard, changes his name and hides his identity once he reaches the college campus. Needless to say, Paige and Eddie interact, fight, fall in love, milk cows, fight, attend a royal ball and fight. Even though parts of the movie were slow, the ending enables “The Prince and Me” to stand out from the others.

» JULIA SAYS

“I felt more comfortable in the college student scenes. But it was certainly fun to wear the ballgown and the dance in the ballroom was so romantic. We shot in a beautiful palace and I felt like I was playing dress-up I didn’t necessarily feel at home there. But it was still thrilling.”

“Milkin makes you look at milk differently. I’m a city girl so I had no idea about a farm. But I got to learn how to ride horses and steer cattle and we saw a cow give birth to a calf, which was pretty amazing. It was an interesting experience to milk a cow. They don’t really do it by hand any more. It was tedious. My God, I don’t know how milkmaids used to do it. So I did it by hand just to get the full experience and you have to be careful. They are huge animals and they shift their weight so much that you have to be careful that they don’t step on you. It was quite an awkward situation. I think the farmers had a good laugh watching the city gir”

“I can be stubbornly independent. Playing Paige I realised that being cynical and sarcastic and focused is a way of being guarded and I feel I do that a lot. I’m only focused on my work because it’s easier to do that than risk falling in love with somebody.”
