NEWS: Studying up on Sylvia Plath
If the movie based on Sylvia Plath's book "The Bell Jar" is bad, it won't be because the star was unprepared. Julia Stiles is doing some serious homework as she prepares to play the tragic heroine of Plath's one and only novel. Over the weekend, the actress attended a symposium at Smith College commemorating the writer's would-be 75th birthday. (Plath, a Smith alum, committed suicide in 1963 at the age of 30.) We're told Stiles attended every talk of the symposium, taking notes and asking questions of the high-powered panel of Plath scholars. During a discussion with the poet's onetime roommate Marcia Brown Stern, former boyfriend Philip McCurdy, and classmate Elinor Friedman Klein, the actress inquired how the poet "carried herself." In response, McCurdy recalled Plath's "long legs." Stiles, who is producing the movie version of Plath's book, also took a tour of Northampton's Academy of Music Theatre, where, we're told, she may premiere "The Bell Jar." The actress said she'll be back on campus soon to look at a gown once worn by Plath. source

UPCOMING: ‘V To The Tenth' set for April 12
“V To The Tenth,” an event that marks the 10th anniversary of Eve Ensler's organization V-Day, will take place Sat., April 12, at The New Orleans Arena at 7:30 p.m. The purposes of the event are to celebrate V-Day's 10 years of fighting to end violence against women and girls, and to honor the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South. Among the many celebrities expected to take part are Glenn Close, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Hudson, Eve, Rosario Dawson, Common, Marisa Tomei, Faith Hill, Julia Stiles and Sally Field. Founded by Ensler in 1998 at the first benefit of her award-winning play The Vagina Monologues, V-Day has raised over $50 million for local anti-violence groups with benefits taking place in over 120 countries to date. In addition, there will be an ongoing event called Superlove Fri.-Sat., April 11-12, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Superlove—which will have everything from slam poets to a yoga lounge—will also feature celebrities, including Ilene Chaiken, creator of The L Word. See www.vday.org for tickets and more information. source

NEWS: A class of her own
IT is easy to imagine that celebrities have enough fame and/or talent to get by without tertiary qualifications. After all, aren’t talent and/or good looks – with perhaps a dash of confidence and attitude – all that you need to fuel a successful career in the entertainment industry? An actress, who studied in New York at Columbia University, is Julia Stiles, who had made her debut in the off-Broadway La Mama Theatre at 11. While developing her acting career, Stiles attended New York's Professional Children's School. In 2000, she enrolled in Columbia, where she majored in English. Not used to having a roommate, but not wanting to isolate herself from her peers, Stiles stayed in a single dorm room on campus. In the February 2003 issue of YM, she admitted that she was initially concerned about fitting in with her classmates. “I was reluctant to stand out,” Stiles wrote in the magazine. “Two years ago, during freshman orientation, when everyone goes around and says their name and where they are from and what their favourite animal is and what they want to be when they grow up, I had no idea how to handle the idea of my profession ... “Should I make a joke about it and say, 'Hi, I'm Julia. I'll be majoring in English. My favourite animal is a Siberian tiger, and perhaps you've seen me is such hit movies as Save the Last Dance and 10 Things I Hate About You'?” In the end, she did not mention anything at all about acting. In another interview with US Weekly, Stiles said that while she was often recognised on campus, she found comfort among a close-knit group of friends who “don't have an issue with (my celebrity)”. Despite taking several breaks from her studies to act in movies, she graduated from Columbia in 2005. source
INTERVIEW: Quick interview @ Temperley London
Nicky Hilton and Julia Stiles spent their Thursday afternoon taking in the styles and sights of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. The two lovely young ladies paid a visit to the Alice & Oliva show held at Bryant Park, dropping by the backstage area to pose for pictures and chat amongst one another. Meanwhile, the big talk around the show focuses on the low-cost sneakers that hit the runway - shown by Abaete by Laura Poretzky, Lela Rose and Stacey Bendet for Alice + Olivia. “Can you believe—Payless? They look like Louboutins,” Rose said, referring to French designer Christian Louboutin, whose shoes fetch $600 a pair or more in luxury department stores. QUICK INTERVIEWWhat do you love about Temperley London?I actually wear her stuff! I think that she designs beautiful dresses and blouses, and they make you feel elegant, practical and unique. What are you working on now?I just finished a movie called Cry of the Owl that’s a BBC production. It should come out in a year. What’s your ideal vacation spot?I’m about to go on vacation to El Salvador. I’ve never been there before so I can’t say it’s my favorite yet, but, yeah, I’m about to go there in a week. source / source
NEWS: Julia Stiles Donates Clothes to The Bottomless Closet
Every piece of clothing that actress Julia Stiles gets free, and most of the ones she doesn't ends up at The Bottomless Closet. This is truly one of the great organizations. What they do is to provide business attire for women who cannot afford to buy it. A woman who has been homeless and just started her first job can't go out and buy new clothes or even used clothes for her new job. What Bottomless Closet does is provide business attire to women who cannot afford it and hopes when they succeed they will return the favor. Obviously Julia gets lots of clothes that are useful to the program. She also realizes that she is not the same size as many of the women in the program and therefore makes a conscious effort to get additional sizes from the companies that provide her free clothes. When she busy her own clothes, she often buys another exact set to give away and is very good also at shaming stores into giving her extra clothes for the program. Julia doesn't ask for any credit for doing this and doesn't seek attention for her cause. She does it because she cares about doing good, just to do good. source
